How to Write Business Copy with AI (Without Sounding Like a Robot)
AI copy is easy to spot. Most of it sounds like a mid-tier LinkedIn thought leader wrote it at 2am. Here's how to make yours sound like you.
Why AI copy sounds generic (and how to fix it)
Two reasons:
- No context — the AI doesn't know your voice.
- One-shot prompting — the AI defaults to the safest, most bland version.
Fix the context and iterate the prompt. Problem gone.
The context doc is 80% of the game
Your Claude context doc needs:
- 5 lines you've actually written in your voice
- 3 phrases you'd never say
- Your typical sentence length (short? long? mixed?)
- Rhythm rules ("Never start with 'In today's world'")
My 3-prompt copy loop
- Draft: "Write a first draft of {piece}. Match my voice from context. Under {word count}."
- Critique: "You're now a skeptical direct-response copywriter. Critique that draft. Where is it weak?"
- Rewrite: "Now rewrite it, fixing every critique."
The second pass is 80% better than the first.
Editing AI copy — the "read out loud" test
Read every piece out loud. If any sentence doesn't sound like something you'd actually say, cut it.
Voice examples: hooks, VSL, cold email, landing page
Different formats need different rules:
- Hooks: 10 words or less. One clear promise.
- VSL: short sentences. Contractions. Verbal, not written.
- Cold email: 60 words. Line breaks after every sentence.
- Landing page: headline promises the outcome, subhead handles the objection.
Prompts you can steal
- "Rewrite this so the first line is a hook, not a set-up."
- "Kill every adjective that isn't earning its keep."
- "Make this sound like a founder wrote it, not a marketer."
Kyle's Note: AI writes. You edit. That's the deal. The moment you ship AI's first draft, you sound like everyone else who's shipping AI's first draft.
